SuperWoman Records: Empowering Black Women and Gender Expansive Musicians in Austin's Music Scene

SuperWoman Records, founded by artist Sharecess "Cat" Carter, has evolved from a passion project into a dynamic platform dedicated to supporting and advancing the careers of Black women and gender expansive musicians in Austin, Texas. The mission of SuperWoman Records is clear: to break down barriers, promote economic equality, and create a safe and nurturing environment for underrepresented artists to thrive.

In a city renowned as the "Live Music Capital of the World," the stark underrepresentation of racial and gender diversity in the music scene is a glaring issue. Black women and gender nonconforming individuals face unique challenges when pursuing their musical dreams in Austin. SuperWoman Records is on a mission to change this status quo.

"SuperWoman Records aims to make Black women as prominent in the Austin music scene as any white male artist," shares founder Sharecess "Cat" Carter. "Our commitment goes beyond music; it's about culture, representation, and empowerment."

The heart of SuperWoman Records lies in its innovative approach to community involvement. The label operates by involving the community in every step of an artist's journey. From the selection of artists for each cohort to choosing the featured song and branding direction, the community's voice is paramount.

"We believe in transparency and community empowerment," states Carter. "The community nominates the artists, selects the song, and guides the branding. This approach ensures that we're creating art that resonates with our community."

SuperWoman Records also seeks to address the financial disparities faced by Black women musicians in Austin. Despite the city's vibrant music scene, many Black women artists struggle to secure paid opportunities beyond the limited 6% Black population. SuperWoman Records aims to change this by providing mentorship, education, and financial support to emerging BIPOC artists.

To cap off each artist's journey, SuperWoman Records hosts a festival where community members who actively participated in the campaign are invited to be guest hosts. This inclusivity is at the core of SuperWoman Records' mission.

The Austin music scene is on the verge of transformation, thanks to the tireless efforts of SuperWoman Records. By breaking down barriers, fostering representation, and involving the community, this record label is not only changing the narrative but also enhancing the vibrancy of Austin's music culture.
